Former player Charles Haeger who was sought in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend in a Phoenix suburb was found dead Saturday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Grand Canyon, police said.
The body of Charles Haeger, 37, was discovered about 4 p.m. on a trail along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, Sgt. Ben Hoster, a Scottsdale Police Department spokesman said in a statement Saturday night.
Police said Haeger's unoccupied vehicle was found near Flagstaff, Arizona, on Saturday. Investigators determined that the victim's roommate heard gunshots when he returned home Friday and was confronted by Haeger as he exited the victim's bedroom, Hoster said.
"Haeger then pointed the handgun at the roommate. The roommate quickly escaped out of the back of the residence, and he was able to get a neighbor to call 911," Hoster added.
Haeger last pitched in the majors in 2010 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Haeger also played with the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox.
