Derwin James Talks Draft Night, Family In The NFL

Derwin James On Draft Night

Derwin James joins Roggin and Rodney to talk about draft night, family in the NFL and more. The Los Angeles Chargers selected James 17th in the first round of the NFL Draft. James says that it was a feeling like no other to hear his name get called by the commissioner.

"I was excited man. It was a wonderful feeling. Once I got that phone from Mr. Telesco I felt really good. Nobody really contacted me. Actually the Chargers didn't even contact me. They called my agent and my agent handed me the phone. I don't know if my phone was working that night or not."

James comes from a family of football. He currently has three cousins that play in the NFL. He says that having family and a former FSU teammate by his side, will make his transition to league easier.

"They made the process that much easier for me. Those guys gave me a lot of advice. I'm just excited to have the guys with me through the whole process. I'm just ready to compete at the next level."

James' 6 foot 3, 211 pound frame, enabled him to play physical during his time at FSU. Many mock drafts compared him to Kam Chancellor on the way he plays the safety position. However, James isn't looking too much into the comparisons.

"That's a great comparison. Of course it's great being in the conversation with some of the guys like that, that are all-pro safetys. But you know I'm trying to come in and be the best Derwin James I can be. I'm just happy I get to come into a great organization. I'm ready to go to work."
