Chargers First Round Pick: Get To Know Derwin James

Derwin James at FSU

The Chargers used their first round pick on safety Derwin James from Florida State University.

James was project to be picked in the top 10 but slipped to the Chargers with all the quarterbacks, offensive tackles and defensive tackles taken before him. One of the Chargers' issues on the defensive end last season came at the safety position. James will look to strengthen that position with his 6-2, 215 pound frame.

At the combine, the 21-year-old ran a 4.47 40-yard dash and tallied a 40-inch vertical. He was also a second-team All-American in 2017.

Last season at Florida State, James had 84 tackles, 2 interceptions and 11 pass deflections in 12 games.

On a personal note, James' mother nicknamed him "Poor Bear" because he was born really hairy and husky.
