The first ever NBA Awards start tonight at 9pm/ET

Monday night will be the inaugural NBA Awards at Basketball City at Pier 36 in New York City. You can watch it tonight starting at 9pm ET on TNT.

Instead of announcing the regular season award winners throughout the playoff the NBA decided to create an event that celebrated basketball on a global scale.

"We're talking about bringing together the best players in our league, together with celebrities and legends, our teams and ownership," NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum told USA TODAY Sports in March."It's a true celebration, but a fun night to celebrate the game of basketball on a global basis."

The night will be hosted by Drake and a commercial promises a killer performance by Nicki Minaj.

Some of the nominees and categories include:

  • MVP: Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden
  • Coach of the Year: Mike D'Antoni, Gregg Popovich, Erik Spoelstra
  • Rookie of the Year: Malcolm Brogdon, Joel Embiid, Dario Saric
  • Most Improved Player: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Rudy Gobert, Nikola Jokic
  • Defensive Player of the Year: Rudy Gobert, Draymond Green, Kawhi Leonard
  • Sixth Man: Andre Iguodala, Eric Gordon, Lou Williams
