It is official. The Dodgers have acquired stars Max Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals.
The Dodgers are finalizing a deal to acquire star right-hander Max Scherzer and star shortstop Trea Turner from the Washington Nationals for a massive prospect haul, sources tell Ken Rosenthal. The Nationals receive catcher Keibert Ruiz, starter Josiah Grah, RHP Gerardo Carillo and outfielder Donovan Casey.
The Dodgers will get Scherzer, who will become a free agent this winter, and Turner, who has one additional season of team control, while reportedly taking on the money owed to each. They’ll send the Nationals an impressive package that includes two of their top prospects, catcher Keibert Ruiz and pitcher Josiah Gray, as well as outfielder Donovan Casey and pitcher Gerardo Carrillo. That replenishes a depleted farm system for Washington. It gives a meaningful boost to the odds of winning not just the division, but the World Series, for L.A.
Scherzer is one day removed from making what appears to have been a final start for the Nationals. He was scratched from an outing last Saturday due to right triceps discomfort, but did manage to throw a bullpen session on Monday. Scherzer then was back on the mound Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies. He allowed just one run over six innings and improved to 8-4 with a 2.76 ERA, 3.46 FIP and 0.89 WHIP in 19 starts.
