The United States Women’s National Team defeated Spain 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims, France on Monday.
Two penalties from captain Megan Rapinoe sandwiched a Jenni Hermoso goal Monday in Reims, giving the United States a 2-1 win over Spain in a very scrappy match.
Until Monday, the Americans had not allowed a goal in eight straight matches dating back all the way back to the 2016 Olympics, outscoring opponents 44-0. It was the first goal the United States had allowed this year since a 5-3 win over Australia in an April friendly. The United States have gone through this group with ease scoring a stage record 18 goals.
Rapinoe's second spot kick in the 75th minute, which was upheld after the tournament's latest bout with VAR, confirmed that the United States Women's National Team will meet fellow World Cup favorite France in the quarterfinals on June 28 in Paris.
