UCLA fired men's basketball head coach Steve Alford on Monday after starting 7-6 this season.
Thursday, the UCLA Bruins hosted Stanford in its Pac-12 opener and broadcaster Pasch asked Walton, who was a former UCLA star with two NCAA championships, who he thought the next Bruins coach should be.
Walton caught some attention with his response:
“I’m sticking with Barack Obama until he says no,” the former UCLA and NBA great told broadcasting partner Dave Pasch.
Barack Obama, the 44th president of U.S., is a huge basketball fan and famously made his March Madness brackets into an annual tradition. His brother-in-law, Craig Robinson, played at Princeton before coaching at Brown University and Oregon State.
UCLA, which fired head coach Steve Alford this week after four straight losses, beat Stanford 92-70, under interim coach Murry Bartow. But the permanent gig remains open.
