Why would Red Sox move on from Mookie Betts?

I know they have had attempts to sign Mookie long term. But, Red Sox extended Bogarts, Chris Sale, David Price. It just got to the point where they were uncomfortable with that long term commitment.

I think Mookie Betts is one of the best players in the game.
