Dodgers Farm Report: Alex Verdugo on a tear at Triple-A OKC

At the midway point of the 2017 season, here's a glance at what's going on with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate.

Alex Verdugo has been the undoubted star for the Oklahoma City Dodgers as of late, building a 20-game hitting streak and raising his batting average by over 50 points since June 8th. These efforts have been recognized with an invitation to the 2017 All-Star Futures Game, where Verdugo will be joined by coach Luis Matos.

Verdugo's consistent dominance at the plate has spurred speculation of when the 21-year-old will receive his promotion to the big league squad. Due to a surplus of outfield depth, however, it appears unlikely Verdugo will see any action at the MLB-level before September.

Unfortunately, it has not been all positive news out of Oklahoma City this season.

Prized pitching prospect Julio Urias injured his left shoulder during a June 10 appearance for the triple-A affiliate, and the result was a torn anterior capsule that required season-ending surgery.

“He had high expectations for helping us win in 2017, as did we,” Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman told the Los Angeles Times. “That’s taken a significant blow. But our focus now is doing everything we can to get him back as healthy as we can to help us for many years to come.”

Urias was expected to play a vital role in what the Dodgers are hoping amounts to a deep postseason run. Now, the team will simply hope he is back to full strength by the time the 2018 season arrives.
