Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Turner's two-run homer in the eighth lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres in a pitchers' duel at Chavez Ravine.
Carl Crawford snapped a string of 12 straight retired by Tyson Ross with an infield single off the glove of the San Diego starter to begin the eighth. Turner then stroked a hanging slider over the wall in left to give Los Angeles the lead.
Ross (11-12) was charged with two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts in the tough-luck loss as he did an admirable job dueling Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw.
Kershaw (15-3), who was originally scheduled to start Friday, was on the hook for the loss, but he picked up the win instead after going eight strong innings and allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 10 in the win.
Kenley Jansen came on in the ninth and picked up his 36th save of the season.
Kershaw walked Rene Rivera to give San Diego its first baserunner of the night with one out in the second, then the southpaw proceeded to retire the next 12 batters he faced.
The two hurlers breezed through each team's order early on, and that wasn't more evident than in the fourth inning. Kershaw used six pitches to get through the Padres' order, then Ross needed only five to retire the side in the home half.
Ross had given up just two hits when he stepped to the plate with two outs in the sixth and broke up Kershaw's no-hit bid with a single to left.
San Diego got something going an inning later. Abraham Almonte singled to left to begin the frame and Jedd Gyorko walked to put a pair of runners on with no outs. Tommy Medica pushed Almonte to third with a flyout before Rivera's RBI single opened the scoring.
